Hey,
Good news.
Valencia Airport just announced something we've been waiting years for: direct flights to ALL four Scandinavian capitals starting in 2026. Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, and Helsinki. This is the first time ever.
If you're from Northern Europe or have friends and family there, you know how annoying it's been connecting through Barcelona or Madrid. That's over now.
What's Actually Changing
Starting this year, you can fly direct from Valencia to Copenhagen (SAS and Norwegian), Oslo (Norwegian), Stockholm (Norwegian), and Helsinki (Finnair). No more 6 hour journeys for what should be a 3 hour flight.
But it's not just Scandinavia. The airport's adding 20+ new routes total, including Rome with ITA Airways, more London options (Luton and Gatwick on top of existing routes), Venice, Florence, Lille, and Rabat.
Translation: cheaper flights, more options, less stress getting home or having visitors come see you.
Why This Matters for Expats
The Valencian tourism councillor said something that actually makes sense for once. The expansion "directly improves the quality of life of those who live in Valencia because it allows them to be better connected with Europe and the World."
They're right. This isn't just about tourism. It's about:
**Making visits home actually affordable.** Right now, flying to Scandinavia from Valencia costs €200-400 return because you're connecting. Direct flights mean budget airlines can compete. Expect prices to drop to €80-150 return on Norwegian or Ryanair.
Getting your people here easier.Your parents/friends have been saying "we'll visit" for two years but the flights were complicated. Now? Direct flight, 3 hours, done. They'll actually come.
**Weekend trips become possible. Want to see Stockholm for a long weekend? You can now. Leave Friday evening, back Sunday night. The kind of spontaneous travel you took for granted before moving here.
Job flexibility if you work remotely.** Need to be in Copenhagen for a client meeting? Day trip. No hotel needed. This opens up work opportunities that weren't realistic before.
The Full New Routes List
In case you're curious about all the new connections (beyond Scandinavia):
Italy:Rome, Venice, Florence (finally, proper Italian connections)
UK:London Luton, London Gatwick (on top of existing Heathrow, Stansted, and other UK cities)
France:Lille (easy access to northern France and Belgium)
Morocco:Rabat (new North African option)
The airport expects 7 million passengers this year, up from 6 million in 2024. They're not messing around with this expansion.
When Can You Book?
Most routes are already bookable for Spring/Summer 2026. Check Norwegian, SAS, Ryanair, and ITA Airways directly. Prices are still high right now (early booking premium), but they'll drop as airlines compete and add more flights.
Pro tip: Set Google Flights alerts for your home city. You'll get notified when prices drop below your target.
The Bigger Picture
Valencia's been growing fast for expats—106,000 in the "I LOVE VALENCIA" Facebook group, 58,000 in "Valencia Expats," and thousands more arriving every month. The city's finally investing in infrastructure that matches that growth.
Direct Scandinavian flights are just the start. There's talk of more North American connections (currently just New York seasonal), expanded Metro lines, and better international services across the board.
For once, the bureaucracy is keeping up with the reality that Valencia isn't just a Spanish city anymore. It's becoming a proper European hub.
One Small Complaint
The airport is still tiny and gets chaotic during peak times. If you're flying in July or August, get there 2.5 hours early. Security lines are brutal. Hopefully they'll expand the terminal next, but knowing Spanish bureaucracy, that's a 2028 problem.
For now, we'll take the win.
Next Week
I'm breaking down the real cost of living in Valencia in 2026—neighborhood by neighborhood, with actual numbers from expats living here. Spoiler: it's still cheaper than most of Europe, but some costs have quietly doubled since 2024.
Until then, start planning that trip home.
Cheers,

P.S.If you're Scandinavian or have connections up north, forward this to your people. They'll finally run out of excuses not to visit.
P.P.S What route do you wish Valencia had? Hit reply and tell me. If enough people say the same city, I'll look into why it doesn't exist yet.
